Technology R&D

Developing mobile software and applications is the heart and soul of our technical R&D. Most of this work is heavily design-driven, taking place in an interdisciplinary creative environment in which engineers, designers, artists, ethnographers and other researchers - even end users - collaborate to design new interactive technologies and prototypes. To date, we have created a new software engine for fast prototyping mobile and location-based experiences (MEE), dabbled in wearable sensors and interactions (Global Heart Rate), experimented with public authoring tools and in-situ locative content creation (WapitiMap), created fully proven and tested mobile experience prototypes (Tracklines, Locative Learning project, Footnotes and others), and begun to explore the realm of cross-platform geobrowsers, remote networks and sensors, and environmental installations. Increasingly, our values tend toward open source principles, collaborative development, and the incorporation of sustainable technologies, renewable energy sources, and environmental design principles into our strategies and designs. Our intention is to continue developing new and relevant mobile software and prototypes while exploring new directions in sustainable media and technology creation, open development strategies, "slow technology", and other R&D realms as dictated by our holistic design values and goals.
